COVID-19

Where are we currently?

The country has moved to lockdown alert level 2 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is imperative that we all remain vigilant to curb the spread of Covid-19. Always wear a mask, wash your hands, cough into your elbow or a tissue and practise social distancing. These efforts have protected both public and private healthcare systems from being overwhelmed thus far.

Over the last few weeks, we have seen a steady decline in new cases and by most measures we are currently doing well. This has translated into decreased Covid-19 hospital admissions, and as a result, Christiaan Barnard Hospital and MediCross Day Hospital have been able to fully reopen for doctor’s consultations and elective surgery.

This is how your hospital visit will differ:

The decreasing Covid-19 cases and admissions is great news, but this does not mean the pandemic is over. We still need to practise under strict guidelines to prevent a resurgence in cases.

These are some of the protocols in place to protect our patients and staff:

Consultations:

  • If you think you have Covid-19, please inform us before your consultation and contact the Covid-19 helpline (0800029999 or 0800111132) or click here for online assessment tool.
  • Where possible, please arrive alone or with one accompanying adult (minors or those requiring assistance).
  • You are required to wear a face mask covering your mouth and nose at ALL TIMES
  • Prior to your consultation you will be sent a pre-consultation screening questionnaire
  • On arrival at the hospital, you will be screened for Covid-19. Please allow an extra 10 minutes for this. This can be completed online prior to your arrival to speed up the process.
  • Wherever feasible, only one consultation will be managed in the consulting room at any time. If we are not running on time, you will be asked to wait in your car and called when the consulting room is free.
  • Hand sanitiser will be provided.
  • Staff and doctor will be wearing appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment).
  • Rooms are thoroughly sanitised in-between consultations. This includes Ozone-UV cleaning (you may notice an earthy odour as a result)
  • Equipment is sterilised in the hospital theatre
  • During lockdown, Telehealth (either Zoom or telephonic) consultations are available upon request. Please complete the relevant Telehealth Consent form (new patients/existing patients) if this is your preferred option.

Surgery:

  • All booked surgical cases require a negative Covid-19 PCR test within 72 hours of the proposed surgery date
  • This includes paediatric cases, where an oropharyngeal (mouth) swab can be requested in preference to the nasopharyngeal (nose) swab. The accompanying parent is also required to be tested
  • You are required to self-isolate after the test until your surgery and for a week post op
  • If you test positive, surgery will be postponed for a minimum of 14 days after symptoms settle. You (and your close contacts) will be asked to self-isolate and be monitored for symptoms
  • If you have tested positive within 4 months of the surgery date, and remain asymptomatic, no repeat test is required
