Epistaxis (nose bleeds)

What causes nose bleeds?

Nose bleeds or epistaxis is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. It often has no obvious cause, but can be caused by an injury to the nose, irritation inside the nose or growths witin the nose or sinuses. In some cases, underlying diseases or blood thinning medication may cause the nose to bleed.

 

How can it be treated?

The initial management of nose bleeds is first aid to stop the bleeding. This involves pinching the nose at the bottom (soft part, not over the nasal bones) for 5-10 minutes. If this does not stop the initial bleeding, then medical attention should be sought.

If you experience severe or recurrent nose bleeds, it is a good idea to seek medical help. Your doctor may decide to seal the blood vessel to prevent further bleeding. In some cases, it may be necessary to undergo a nasal packing process where especially designed packs are placed on the inside of the nostrils to stop the bleeding.
