What is nasal obstruction?

Nasal obstruction or nasal blockage refers to difficulty breathing through the nasal cavities. This can be an intermittent or persistent problem and affect either one or both nostrils depending on the cause. Other symptoms may include: runny nose, discharge from the nose, breathing difficulty or sleep apnoea.

 

What are the causes of nasal obstruction?

Nasal obstruction in childhood is a common problem. Some causes include:

  • Adenoidal hypertrophy (enlarged adenoids)
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Sinusitus
  • Rarely, nasal tumours or congenital malformations
