What causes nasal obstructions?

Nasal obstruction is a very common complaint that can affect both children and adults. There are numerous potential causes for the nose to be blocked, these include:

  • Adenoidal hypertrophy (enlarged adenoids)
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Chronic rhinitis (with or without nasal polyps)
  • Infection (sinusitis)
  • Nasal tumours

What are the symptoms?

Some common symptoms include a blocked nose, itching nose, runny nose, ear problems (including glue ear) and sleep apnoea.

Deviated Septum

What is a deviated septum?

A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage and bone in the nose that separates the nostrils is uneven. This may be as a result of nasal trauma.

What are the symptoms?

Although a deviated septum is relatively common, it can cause the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Sinus infections
  • Nasal congestion
  • Facial pain
  • Sleep disruptions

How can it be treated?

In severe cases, surgery can be performed in order to straighten out a deviated septum. This procedure is known as a septoplasty and involves removing deviated bone or cartilage, thus straightening the septum. During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision on the side of the nose and lift the mucous membrane in order to remove the deviated bone or cartilage. The septum and membrane are then stitched in place. Minimally invasive surgery is performed using specialised cameras and equipment through the nose. No external cuts are made.

How does the procedure work?

Surgery helps to realign the septum and improve breathing.

Septal Perforation Repair

What is a septal perforation?

Septal perforation is a hole in the nasal septum. A perforation can develop as a result of nasal trauma, previous surgery, drug use or on occasion no cause is found. Often septal perforations have no symptoms, but occasionally they may cause a whistling noise when breathing through the nose, excessive crusting, pain, nose bleeds or deformity of the nasal tip.

What is septal perforation repair?

Septal perforation repair is a surgical procedure that is performed to repair a hole in the nasal septum. The surgical procedure involves using mucous membrane within the nose to cover the hole in the septum . This is done with the use of a minimally invasive surgery, specialised cameras and equipment through the nose.
