Reinke’s Oedema

What is reinke's oedema?

Reinke's space is one of the layers of the vocal cord.  Reinke's oedema is a condition that causes the vocal cords to swell as a result of fluid collecting in this space. This is a benign condition and is most commonly caused by smoking.

 

What are the symptoms?

Reinke’s oedema commonly presents with hoarseness, or change in voice quality and can cause shortness of breath or difficulty with breathing in severe cases.

 

How can it be treated?

It is possible to treat this condition surgically by removing the fluid and swollen tissue from the vocal cords. It is essential to stop smoking or this condition will recur.
