What is tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is an infection in the tonsils, which causes inflammation and swelling. It is typically caused by a virus, and in some cases, by bacteria. It is a contagious disease which is passed easily through coughing and sneezing.
What are the symptoms?
Some common symptoms include a sore throat, swollen tonsils, difficulty eating or drinking, and a fever.
How can it be treated?
Tonsillitis is most commonly caused by viral infection so only require pain tablets and anti-inflammatories. If your doctor suspects a bacterial infection then antibiotics may be prescribed. If you have recurrent tonsillitis, it may be necessary to undergo surgery. The procedure involves removing the tonsils.
